Where we work: Castelsardo
Castelsardo offers spectacular views due to its geographic location. It is situated on a headland which faces the Gulf of Asinara.
The characteristic medieval castle makes a strong visual impression as it stands towering above the village. The interior of the castle is
open to the public all year round andit houses a craft museum and photographic exhibitions. It's easy to get lost among the quiet narrow
streets which are still unaffected by the hustle and bustle of the modern centre. By exploring these streets you can meet the old women
who sit absorbed in their work, making typical Castellanese products, wicker baskets. It is also possible to visit many monuments and
churches.
The cathedral of Saint Anthony Abbot, the village's patron saint, built between the XIV century and the XVIII century has
hidden underground crypts which house the diocesen museum of the Maestro of Castelsardo and the remarkable treasure room. The ancient
church of Saint Mary which was first a Benedictine Priory and then Franciscan up untilthe XIX century is now the home of the Santa
Croce brotherhood. Inside there is the most ancient Sardinian wooden crucifix, called "Lu Criltu Nieddu", the black Christ, because
of its dark colour. As the years have gone by the urbanisation of the headland has created a new area centred around the main square
called La Pianedda where the majority of commercial activities and village life can be found. To meet the recent demads of tourism
the port has seen new development, a modern attractive area for water sports and pleasure vessels.
It can't be denied that Castelsardo's
real attraction is still the sea, a deep blue colour in winter and limpid and clear under the summer sun. The coast alternates between
cliffs weathered by the north west wind and fine, sandy beaches which are very clean.
Castelsardo: history and traditions
Founded in 1102 by the most prestigious family of the Genovan Repubblica Marinara, the Doria family, Castelsardo was first
names Castel Genovese. In 1448 it became Castello Aragonese when the Sardinian resistance fell to the Spanish power. It finally became
Castelsardo after the expulsion of the final invaders. There is proof of these invaders in the place names and linguistic expressions in the
local dialect.
There are varied and numerous Castellanese traditions, including religios rituals during Holy Week during which there is the
most ancient representation of the Passion of Christ, called "Lunissanti". This is unique, not only beacuse of the spectacular scenography
of medieval origin but also because of the chants of the choirs, chanted alternately. Other important events are the summer folk festival,
the traditional trip to sea for the blessing of the boats during the fisherans festival in August and in April the Asinara bay rally which
attracts many fans.
